Salomon Morel a War criminal who hasn't paid

This guy didn’t paid for his crimes because he flied to Israel where he received protection despite several
demands of extradition from Polish authorities who condemned him..

Salomon Morel (November 15, 1919 – February 14, 2007) was a Polish communist official and an accused war
criminal. At the end of World War II, he became the commander of the infamous Zgoda labour camp,[1] and
during the government of the Polish United Workers’ Party, he rose to the rank of colonel in the political
police, or Urząd Bezpieczeństwa, as head of a prison in Katowice.

In 1994, soon after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Morel was indicted by Poland’s Institute of
National Remembrance of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the "revenge killing" of 1,500
prisoners.[2] After his case was publicized by the Polish, German, British, and American media, Morel fled
to Israel and was granted sanctuary under the Law of Return. Poland twice requested his extradition, but
Israel did not comply, citing a lack of evidence.

On March 15, 1945, Morel became the commander of the infamous Zgoda camp in Świętochłowice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zgoda_labour_camp

He was a member of the Ministry of Public Security of Poland or MBP (Ministerstwo Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego)

The MBP was a Polish communist secret police, intelligence and counter-espionage service operating from 1945
to 1954 under Jakub Berman of the Politburo. Its main goal was the eradication of the anti-communist
structures and socio-political base of the underground Polish Secret State as well as the persecution of
soldiers of the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) and Freedom and Independence (WiN) active during World War
II. In that capacity, MPB remained known mainly through its own regional offices called Urząd Bezpieczeństwa
Publicznego or UBP (Office of Public Security, official name); and Urząd Bezpieczeństwa or UB (Office, or
Department of Security).[1]

Hindu Americans – The Surprising, Hidden Population Trends of Hinduism in the U.S.

Hindu Americans: The Surprising, Hidden Population Trends of Hinduism
in the U.S.

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 opens up Asian
immigration. Transcendental Meditation takes off. Young people in
shaved heads and saffron robes chant "Hare Krishna" at airports.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Hinduism seemed on the path to spectacular
growth in the United States as immigration laws eased and some Indian
spiritual leaders were embraced by the counterculture of the l960s.

The forecasts were half right.

Transcendental Meditation and movements such as the International
Society for Krishna Consciousness would face growing anti-cult
opposition, among other obstacles. They would not be the path to
lasting growth in Western converts to Hinduism.

What is propelling Hinduism in the United States into a role as one
of the nation’s largest minority religions is a steady stream of
Indian immigrants who have built hundreds of temples across the
nation, according to a new study.

In what it calls the first effort to conduct a Hindu census in the
United States, the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Institute of American
Religion discovered some 1,600 temples and centers with an estimated
600,000 practicing Hindus.

That number could easily rise up to the estimated 1.2 million who
self-identify as Hindus in national studies by adding in the mostly
Indian Americans who limit their involvement to private spiritual
practices or celebrations of semi-secularized holy days such as
Diwali, said J. Gordon Melton, the institute executive director.
Melton announced the results of the census at the recent annual
meeting of the Association for the Study of Religion, Economics and
Culture in Washington.

For better and worse, however, the latest incarnation of Hinduism in
the United States has gone largely unnoticed by most Americans.

Immigration Gains

Hinduism was introduced to the United States through the 19th century
translation of texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. The first Indian
teacher to visit the U.S., P.C. Mozoomdar, spoke in 1830 at the home
of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Melton and Constance Jones of the California
Institute for Integral Studies noted in a paper presented at the
Washington conference.

Other gurus followed, but the growth of the Hindu community was cut
short by the Asian Exclusion Act in 1924, Melton and Jones said.

The comeback began in 1965 with the new immigration law opening the
U.S. to Indian immigrants. Among the prominent spiritual leaders to
come over were Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental
Meditation movement, and Swami Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada of the
Krishna society.

Many Americans welcomed the gurus, but interest among non-Indians
faded in the 1970s amid lawsuits, scandals and an emerging anti-cult
movement.

At the same time, a growing Indian immigrant community began building
temples and centers to meet its spiritual needs. In its census, the
Institute of American Religion found 258 traditional Hindu temples
with an estimated 268,000 adherents. The study estimated there are
also 400 temples and centers from Hindu sub-traditions that have an
estimated 282,000 participants and some 940 centers with an estimated
55,000 members associated with smaller movements across the country.

Yet much of this growth, Melton and Jones said, has occurred "almost
invisibly" on the edge of the larger American religious community.

While there is at least one Hindu center in every state, they are
largely concentrated in Indian American communities, Melton and Jones
report. A third of all Hindus are found in clusters in California,
New York and New Jersey. Hindu temples or centers can be found in
only 13 percent of U.S. counties, according to the census.

Hinduism does not enter the consciouness of most Americans in their
daily lives. A 2001 Research Opinion Corp. survey found 95 percent of
Americans have little or no knowledge of Hindu beliefs and practices.

But that is about to change, scholars and observers say.

Finding Its Voice

The encouraging news for Hindus is they have avoided much of the
hostility that has challeged other large groups of religious
immigrants to America, including Catholics, Jews and, more recently,
Muslims.

Too small to be a threat to the status quo, and lacking some of the
international baggage that followed other immigrants, Hindus have
been largely left alone to meet the internal needs of finding and
maintaining spiritual homes for a growing membership.

Even the interfaith movement, which slowly built up to include
Protestants, Catholics and Jews, and has more recently reached out to
Muslims, is still largely associated with what are considered the
"Abrahamic" faiths.

Yet as it grows, Hinduism is not expected to remain under the radar
too much longer.

Hindus are gaining political sophistication through groups such as
the Hindu American Foundation, and their geographical concentration
holds the potential for building influential voting blocs in some
regions, Melton said.

Hindu leaders in the U.S. also realize there is a much greater need
for outreach in a country where Hinduism is not ingrained in the
culture, said Anant Rambachan, chair of the Religion Department at
St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

Hindu summer camps have become popular, and most large temples offer
classes on a weekend to educate young people, many of whom were born
in the United States, Rambachan said. More worship manuals and
doctrinal materials are being printed in English.

"My own sense of the future is we are going to see a certain
flourishing of the Hindu tradition in the United States," Rambachan
said.

The days of the Beatles and pop stars like Donovan making highly
publicized trips to India to study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi are
over.

But it turns out Hinduism never needed the buzz to succeed here.

"A much more substantial movement of highly committed people," Melton
and Jones state, "has created a more permanent religious community
that has taken its place as a primary American minority religious
tradition."

New South-Africa police brutality

Cops beat me up, claims woman
2011-05-24 08:11

East London – An Eastern Cape woman claims she was severely beaten up
by police officers outside the East London Airport over the weekend,
the Daily Dispatch reported on Tuesday.

Lulama Feni, 34, said she was assaulted so badly on Saturday evening
that doctors at Frere Hospital told her that her face had been
fractured "numerous times".

Feni said her pleas to the officers to stop only incited their anger.

She said after the beating officers threw her in the back of the
police van and took her to the Fleet Street police station. She claims
officers continued to beat her there.

Feni was released on Monday morning but went back at the station to
open a case of police brutality.

When the Dispatch interviewed Feni outside the police station on
Monday, she could barely speak.

She had deep cuts on both sides of her face and her eyes were swollen
shut.

"I am unable to walk properly and the blood does not stop flowing from
my lips and nose," she said.

Arrest for fraud

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said the woman and
her brother were arrested for fraud.

"Circumstances are still not clear … at this stage as to what
happened. All we know is police were called to a complaint of fake
R200 notes at a tavern," he said, adding that police were
investigating further.

However, Feni dismissed the charges and said she was on her way home
with her boyfriend when they saw police officers arresting her brother-
in-law.

She said after trying to ask the officers why they were arresting her
brother-in-law, they became angry and started to "slap" him around.

"I tried to intervene but I never even finished my question … the
police punched me in the face and I fell on the ground," she said.

Police officers then reportedly kicked her until she stopped moving.

The woman and her brother-in-law will appear in the East London
Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

'U.S. & ABOTTABAD, ISLAMABAD AND INDIA' – by Shyam Saran

Forwarded message from S. N.

U.S. & Abottabad, Islamabad and India by Shyam Saran

Shyam Saran: US & Abbotabad, Islamabad & India

Unless US, China and Saudi Arabia send a coordinated message,
Pakistan’s strategic calculus may never change

By Shyam Saran
Business Standard
Wednesday, May 18, 2011

It is now two weeks since the US carried out a daring commando raid
to kill Al Qaeda chief, Osama bin Laden, in his hideout in Abbotabad.
The US appears to have been handed an unexpected and significant
leverage to bend its two-faced ally to its will. The message to
Pakistan is that it may be spared the worst consequences of its folly
(yet again) if it fulfils the following minimal demands from
Washington:

One, the Pakistan armed forces must carry out operations in the
Waziristan area to degrade, if not eliminate, the Haqqani faction of
the Afghan Taliban, which has been carrying out cross-border armed
operations against the ISAF forces in Southern Afghanistan.

Two, restrain the Afghan Taliban, associated with Mullah Omar, from
proceeding with the current spring offensive against ISAF ; and
Three, prevail upon the Taliban, over which Pakistan has considerable
influence, to enter into reconciliation talks with Karzai government,
so that some measure of political stability and peace can be restored
in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s compliance with these demands could help the successful
execution of President Obama’s exit strategy in Afghanistan,
significantly advancing his chances for re-election next year.

The US is aware that this will not add up to dissuading Pakistan from
the use of cross-border terrorism as an instrument of State policy
against India and and now targeting the US in Afghanistan as well.
Nevertheless, the US may have calculated that it would be best to
extract whatever tactical advantages it can in the short-term rather
than shoot for a more ambitious make-over in the thinking of the
Pakistan elite.

Latest reports from Pakistan indicate that its leaders believe they
retain enough bargaining chips to deflect US demands. After a week of
contradictory and confused responses from both the civilian and
military leaders, a consensus appears to have emerged on how to
handle the aftermath of the bin Laden affair. This is clearly
reflected in the resolution adopted by the Pakistan Parliament on May
14, 2011 and in statements and interviews given by Prime Minister
Yousuf Raza Gilani. The main features of Pakistan’s current posture
are:

1. A rejection of the more damaging charge of complicity (despite
compelling evidence to the contrary) and admission to a lesser charge
of incompetence and intelligence failure. However, the investigation
promised into the latter will focus on the failure to prevent US
violation of Pakistan’s territorial integrity rather than the larger
question of how the Al Qaeda chief could have been in residence for
over five years in a cantonment town close to the capital.

2. Deflect attention away from Pakistan’s intimate links with the
network of terrorist groups laid bare by the raid and focus instead
on the violation of its territorial integrity and sovereignty by the
US. This will help tap into the widespread hostility towards the US
and overwhelm the uncomfortable questions being asked within Pakistan
itself about the sanctuary provided to terrorist groups. The
suspension of CIA-ISI intelligence sharing and the threat to disrupt
US supply lines to Afghanistan through Pakistan is a reminder to the
US of its dependence on Pakistani goodwill for the continued
execution of its operations in Afghanistan.

3. Flaunt Pakistan’s "all-weather" friendship and alliance with China
to suggest that there are limits to the pressures that the US can
bring to bear on Islamabad. Gilani is undertaking a visit to Beijing
precisely for this purpose. China has been praised for being the only
country which has stood by Pakistan in its hour of need. If this
gambit succeeds, then the US will find its new found leverage rapidly
evaporating into thin air. Why is this happening?

The US has set itself up for blackmail by declaring in advance that
it needs Pakistan’s collaboration in pursuing its Afghan strategy;
that it must continue to engage with and support Pakistan because of
concern over the fate of its rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal; and
because Pakistan’s economic collapse would create a volatile and
dangerous situation in an already difficult neighbourhood. Fears are
expressed that pressures on Pakistan beyond a certain threshold may
tip it into a tighter Chinese embrace, reducing US influence in the
country. These articulations at the most senior levels of US
Government may have convinced Pakistan that it could, yet again, ride
out the consequences from an exposure of its duplicity because of its
perceived indispensability. Instead of Pakistan having to restore
trust among its allies, Gilani has turned the tables and is demanding
that the US strive to win back Pakistan’s trust instead!

There has been tacit acquiescence by the US and its Western allies to
Pakistan’s repeated myth-making over its clandestine pursuit of
nuclear weapons, its dangerous proliferation of nuclear weapons
technology and material to Libya, Iran and North Korea and its
pursuit of cross-border terrorism. Throughout the 1980s, there was
annual certification that Pakistan was not pursuing a nuclear weapons
programme, despite ample evidence to the contrary. Clandestine
proliferation was blamed on a private supermarket run by an
individual Pakistani scientist, rather than confront the real
culprits in the Pakistani establishment. Pakistan has been publicly
and repeatedly praised for its support to the war on terror and anti-
insurgency in Afghanistan even while its duplicity has been condemned
in private.

In an effort to shore up Pakistan’s credentials as an ally, are not
the US and our Western partners undermining their own credibility as
responsible states? Will the bin Laden affair prove to be too big a
lump to swallow this time? Indications are that the Pakistani
establishment may be absolved of responsibility and some unidentified
rogue elements within it will be blamed.

It will be important to see what level of support Pakistan is able to
mobilise in China and Saudi Arabia, its two most critical allies.
Will China counsel a shift away from Pakistan’s current posture to
Gilani because of heightened concerns over Islamic fundamentalism and
terrorism in neighbouring Xinjiang? Will the terrorist killing of a
Saudi diplomat in Karachi lead to Saudi pressures to change course?
Unless there is a degree of coordinated messaging by the US, China
and Saudi Arabia, the strategic calculus in Islamabad is unlikely to
change, cross-border terrorism will continue to be an instrument of
state policy and Pakistan will remain a breeding ground for violence
and terror radiating instability in our region and beyond.

Against this backdrop, India must formulate its own strategy with
respect to Pakistan and Afghanistan, drawing upon assets we possess
and neutralising the liabilities we confront. The measured Indian
response to Abbotabad and Prime Minister’s recent visit to
Afghanistan, with its clear-cut assertion of our long term interest
in that country, point in the right direction.
